A few good friends of mine fit into the singer/songwriter "genre," so I figured I'd post a few tracks of theirs to get the blog ball rolling again. The first batch is from a guy who will not allow me to post these songs under his real name. He goes by the name "Atlas Mason," and though he will probably punch me for saying it, he write from the Tom Waits bag (but with an expanded harmonic sense.) I played with Atlas on some of the other files available for download here...can you guess who it is? Go for it>>>>> Atlas Mason sampler

...and then there is Daniel Clay: former high school mate of Bimbi "Smoofus" Garreaux, theologian, boat builder, furniture designer, incredible guitarist etc. I am usually not a fan of the singer/songwriter thing but Daniel's stuff really draws me in and also...the lyrics are married to the music. Nothing's forced. You'll love it. Here are a few tacks from his new cd "The Protestant." Look for it at the usual places.

D Clay here

I keep saying it, but I have much more to post and I broke the 2000 download milestone a long time ago so some surprises are in the works. beedeebeedeebeedee.

Oh No.

Oh yes. Yeah, I don't either. But I do remember when they were just a two piece band instead of the three piece face rocker offer that they are today (since Dave Down Lains joined.) I just read a blog that Rick posted about the delay of their CD release so I figured now would be a good time to post a sampling from their two fisted days. They went to Nashville and recorded with David Axelrod who was in the great Atlanta band Mock Heroic (who has those cds by the way?.) No not the David Axelrod who is Barack Obama's close consultant...the other one. Anyway, they got into the studio, put their rock and roll pee-pees together and this demo was born. I have forgotten what they call most of their songs so some had to be made up by yours truly. Think about Athens, GA in 1986. "It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine." Some people did not feel fine. Porn Orchard, Barbeque Killers and Jack-o-Nuts come to mind. It just did not sound like the rest of the college radio me-too stuff that was coming out at the time. Yes about twenty people in GA listened to Black Flag then and it's evident in the music.

Around that time my sister was going to UGA and got into the Athens rock scene. She picked up the first Porn Orchard demo cassette, "Hit The Right People Hard," and gave it to me as a birthday present (I think.) It was a life changing event for me and about five other people that grew up in Toccoa, GA. I was in seventh grade at the time. I remember thinking that if some college dudes an hour away from me could come up with this kind of music that "it is fucking possible." It hasn't happened yet in the twenty odd ensuing years, but I still think that it is fucking possible.

Though I enjoyed the prog trio that they became, their first cassette will always be one of the biggest influences on my life...

RIP Ted Hafer...singer and former owner of The Grit
Curtis Pernice now plays guitar with Vic Chestnutt.
Sam Mixon (drums) performs solo music in addition to his professional career.
Ron Hargrove (bass) at last report owned a gas station in North Carolina.

download below...you won't be sorry.

Hit The Right People Hard

one more mach and people would be clamoring for a ride...

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pUR2XbnPkng/R8Qr8JlO-xI/AAAAAAAAAJo/Aw0VkYWGxBo/s400/mach5+cgi.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5171306584492407570" />
It's been a month since my boredom induced blogging fury subsided. All I have left that is not in need of digital conversion (of my own stuff) is le free jazz and whilst I know it's not for everyone, I'm going to end up posting it soon anyway. In the mean time, Erik Herndon from Hell Mach 4 is the only person so far who has responded to my call for music. Come on boys and girls, people actually download this stuff...more than three people...I promise.

Anyway>>>Hell Mach4. Erik teaches guitar at the same music store that I teach out of now and it was a nice surprise to see somebody from back when walk in the door. I say that, but to be honest I never really new much about them. I played a show with them and saw them play several times, but they definitely slipped under my radar at the time (a very easy thing to do.) They also had some longevity, as I heard them practicing as recently as about 2 years ago. Oh yeah, I shared a practice space with them too. Hey Warren, I was the jerkhole who played your amp without asking...sorry. That's what I do. Be a jerkhole...I mean. What was put in my hand was a live recording from le Star Bar (feeling French today (wouldn't that be a great band name...feeling French?)) and I'm assuming it's later rather than earlier in their lifespan. Thanks for the recording Erik.

keep going this way>>>>>>>>>because the recording is here

now come on everyone else...current or old....recordings.....jheesh!!!

Updates. Some of this stuff has been posted before and some has not. One thing is for sure though, playing almost exclusively at the EARL every month and a half is why we became such roc-starz. The Star Bar show was opening for Copa Vance. Maybe a recording of their set is floating around. Hmmm. One of the EARL shows (I think 9/6/02) was a chunklet release party, and another was opening for Ocelot. I would have to listen to every single track one more time to be more specific and Hebrew Elvis is tellin' me "no way, man."

MA 1/17/02 @ the EARL (previously posted)

MA ?/?/02 @ the EARL (incorrectly dated 1/18/01...I have no idea)

MA 8/29/02 live @ the EARL

MA 9/6/02 live@ the EARL

MA first show/MJQ 9/6/01 (previously posted)

MA live @ the Star Bar 7/12/02

MA last show EARL 7/19/03 (previously posted)

Word 'em up. More may be coming if Kpax can get the tapes from West Side Red.

This one also has the "Red Judas" tag on it which I am assuming is the album title.

Here 'tis...

Lost Arc-a-lot

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pUR2XbnPkng/R4-gi2ww-MI/AAAAAAAAAG8/_Yt3M58luK0/s320/geuu_02_img0415.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5156516619038554306" />
Well it seems that the lost Ocelot album is slowly trickling in. Kenyon just sent me one track from it called "red judas scarlet waves of you." Along with Kpax, A-roc and Rum Tum Tugger, a (then) fresh faced young boy named Alex Lambert was pounding the skins. I'm also featured on this track on saxophone and alto flute (my only recording on that instrument before I had to sell it.) Jaheem from Kenyon's original band Vertical Smile/Sibil (?) appears at the end on vocals.

If this song is a description of your life then, my friend, you started out life as a young street tough, committed a heinous crime, fled to a commune in the desert and ended up on a permanent acid trip. I hope that was grammatically correct. Now I'm worried.

I think another track from this will be coming from Gary soon, as he was also a guest on the record. I'm not sure how much was actually mixed down though so we'll see.

Loss Ocelot here...

Another breed of cat.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pUR2XbnPkng/R4uNg2ww-KI/AAAAAAAAAGs/w5PdrYViMOI/s320/ocelot.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5155369794051045538" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_pUR2XbnPkng/R4uNhGww-LI/AAAAAAAAAG0/8OD1qp1tTG8/s320/Rum+Tum+Tugger2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5155369798346012850" />
AAiight...keepin' it real here. Two for the price of one (free.) The night was apparently 9/6/01 and the location was MJQ (remember when they had shows there?.) Moreland Audio was playing our first show opening up for Ocelot. This would have been about two minutes before interest in this kind of music took a complete nosedive. MANY people have said to me since " yeah, people got tired of that shit because they want to hear some ROCK!" The only problem is that the things people have gotten into since then just do not rock, but are in fact rather weak. I hate to quote Billy Joel here, but the man once said "competence is now interpreted as genius." He was actually referring to his own orchestral music there. I guess that means you have to be competent first, though. Uh oh, I'm rambling and bitter now.

What can I say about Ocelot? Four disparate characters who kept it together for several years. They even had their own slanguage, kind of like a mini-gang. Some good ones were "Das dat ol' gay shit"..."bitches leave!!!"...and "tsovertwont." That last one still has me scratching my head. I have no idea what the song titles were so if any of the Ocelot crew wants to leave a list in the comments section then feel free.

The Moreland Audio track that I labeled OG Moistener is the original nine minute version of our tune "The Moistener" that has some parts in it that I had completely forgotten about. There is actually a part in it that we eventually cut out but then used in another song a couple of years later. Only four tracks for this show. I guess we were just getting our feet wet.

Ocelot.........now

Moreland Audio

Project Runway...

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pUR2XbnPkng/R4WQ7Www-GI/AAAAAAAAAGM/QkAKmgvcJ7s/s200/4john26b.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5153684697992198242" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_pUR2XbnPkng/R4WQ7mww-HI/AAAAAAAAAGU/2GnIq6elZlE/s200/777x-hanes-big-man-3-pack-v-neck-shirt-size-2xl-3xl.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5153684702287165554" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_pUR2XbnPkng/R4WQ7mww-II/AAAAAAAAAGc/SVC3P1MNNZc/s200/resize.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5153684702287165570" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_pUR2XbnPkng/R4WQ72ww-JI/AAAAAAAAAGk/leRfnIt_jQM/s200/29908475.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5153684706582132882" />
is starting to become a good reason for me to leave the living room and post stuff on this blog. It also inspires me to think of new fashion ideas, like a men's line that is only made up of white t-shirts. I think that means it's time to post a poor quality John Brown live recording (while my wife is watching project runway at the moment...the whole fashion line thing is a bad attempt at humor...I guess you either have to have seen John Brown play or listen to the first few seconds of this recording very closely (after the guy talks about getting fucked (I guess three nested parentheses = too much of an explanation.)))
So...John Brown was Rick Moore//Bruce Bohannon//Scott Robbins//Mike Haggerty====Guitvox//guitvox//drums//bass. I believe this band was happening concurrently with Purkinje Shift...Scott was moonlighting. Hmmm, what else? Oh yeah they are the second loudest band I've ever seen (next to Helmet.)
Their first show was at one of the porchnik parties on Glen Iris. They didn't have a band name at the time so whoever designed the fliers for the party named them "Thunder Rump." I kind of wish they would have run with that. Anyway, this recording is not from that show. In fact, I have absolutely no idea where it was recorded. One long file with no track marks... Have fun.

John Brown shot the fuck down............here.

truth and beauty.

Crawling from the muds.

<img style="float:left; It is from a cassette recording of the band that eventually turned into Purkinje Shift. It was originally a four piece group that had the bassless lineup of Gary, Scott and me but with the third guitar of Sadek Bazarra (now of Bear in Heaven) added. It's kind of funny because it actually sounds more like Helmet than anything else (to me anyway.) We were toying around with band names and at the time Sadek was WAY into the word "android." I mean like as an adverb or adjective. He would walk around saying things like "man, that shit is so fucking android." I could never figure out exactly what he meant because it seemed to apply to just about everything that he was into. Anyway, he wanted to name the band "The Android Symptom" and even had a circuit board cut into a pick guard for his SG. I'm so happy to say that the name didn't stick (sorry Sadek.) Well, I guess it's obvious that it didn't stick. Eventually we became a three piece band and...Bob's your uncle. Even after two separate fiddlins with the sound quality falls into the sludge-o-phonic category, but it's still interesting. This was recorded sometime in 1996 on Gare Bear's cassette recorder. You may need some Stanbacks afterwards...0nly one song, by the way...

sink into the Prekinjial Ooze right here...

One Long...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_pUR2XbnPkng/R4Lk0Www-BI/AAAAAAAAAFk/iC6mieZUtng/s320/PurkinjeFig17.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5152932511779715090" />
continuous set. That is how a Purkinje Shift live show is meant to be heard. Gary and I dug up a bunch of PS and MA live stuff yesterday and so far this is the only set that someone didn't try to add track marks to. I believe Henry Owings recorded this one as well. There is one abrupt edit in the track as far as I know, and it seems like a minidisc recorder losing power or skipping to my ears. All it says on the cd is 10/9/99 so I have absolutely no idea where this was recorded. We tended to play at the EARL very often so that's what I would guess. I will post the other chopped up stuff soon for documentation's sake, but there are a few other things in line first. I can't figure out why people had the need to figure out where the songs began or ended. It seems like the mystery would make it more exciting. While it's not the best quality as far as live recordings go, the performance is pretty good. As an added bonus there are two songs that were never recorded for the album, so this pretty much represents our entire repertoire.

This show was recorded at the Star Bar by Leebone C//rum. We were opening up for Fiend Without a Face. We didn't end up opening though. What happened? Well, we set up and then did sound check, and then I proceeded down the way to El Myr by myself. What I didn't know was that Brent Hinds (Fiend//Mastodon) showed up after I left and made the other guys tear everything down so Fiend Without a Face could play first and then go hang out with their friends. That is exactly what followed. Fiend played and then they and all their peeps (and everyone who wanted to rub against Brent) went to the bar downstairs while we played. We had our standbys Mack, 30, and Jason in the "crowd" and well, that's about it. I love it when millionaires support the little guys, it warms the cockles of my heart. Hey, it says at the top of the page that I'm bitter. Let's see, what happened to Fiend Without a Face?

Caged angry animals here...

...is hard to find.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_pUR2XbnPkng/R30S6mww9_I/AAAAAAAAAFU/oAmZHPzNBGE/s200/Buy+a+horse+product.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5151294346828511218" />
Way down in the post about the string theory compilation, I talked about the band that I was in called A Good Horse. By the time that was recorded the group had been whittled down to a quintet. Originally there were at least a septet's worth of people in the group and I have dug up a live recording of that incarnation. It was recorded at eyedrum and as far as I can remember the band members were Daniel Clay//Nat Slaughter//Robbie Handley//Ben Davis//Gordon Vernick//Jamie Sheppard//Bryan Fielden========guitar//bass//bass//tenor sax//trumpet//drums//drums. Daniel wrote all of the music and did most of the arranging, but sometimes the arrangements were worked out collectively (especially at the end.) It is a mix of jazz and rock, but I can't call it jazz-rock.

This was back when Daniel, Jamie, Bryan, and Robbie all lived together in East Atlanta and I seem to remember there being some tension on this night because of that. If it comes through in the music at all, then it only helped.

These are relatively long songs so if you download them, sit down and listen. Be productive later. I guarantee you that this attitude is the reason I'm such a financial big shot today.

I did see Daniel recently when Adam O. was in town and he told me that sometimes he does think about playing that kind of music again, but that he's not sure he's ever going to play the electric guitar again. Hey Daniel: bring your acoustic, we'll play quieter.

A Good Horse this way...

also check out...

Daniel's solo Myspace page...

OHHH...danny boy

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_pUR2XbnPkng/R2rA52ww9-I/AAAAAAAAAFM/8SFo0qclLKo/s200/planeoversingapore.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5146137624409339874" />
In the haze known as this afternoon, I somehow remember my conversation last night with Rick Digglesworth aka "Papa Barrel." So if you tried to download the tune "Glover" from the Barrel lp and it didn't work, it should now. Just look to your right in the "Omnibus Links" section and click that bitch. Right before this new thing with Bryan Fielden, Gary and I were playing in a band with Lee Corum on drums called Book of Rides. We got three songs together and then Lee got too busy (hmmmm... .) I feel like the songs were pretty good so I'll put em on up for yas. They were recorded in sparkling thunderbox stereo mush. I don't know if we'll rearrange these songs or parts of them with Bryan. We'll see.

Songs this way...

Broken omnibus lnks

are fxx//d

Yess Yess Yule

<img style="display:block; Originally he wanted it to be a big involved thing with multiple drummers and many guitarists but it ended up being just a quartet. It was: Russell//guitar---Rick Moore//guitar---Lee Corum//drumset//hand percussion---me//bass//tenor sax//hand percussion. Russel had it posted somewhere but I can't find it anymore.

Anyway, it is one 16 minute recording divided into about four sections. The first section is total noise. The whole band overdubbed on top of itself playing chaotic craziness. The next section is slow sludge a la melvins/earth, but based on a random numeric form we came up with. That goes into a drone rock groove section over which I play saxophone and Lee and I also overdubbed bongo and conga drums. That's right, Lee played hand drums. That eventually gets into the closing math polyriff for about two minutes. Just like some of the avant jazz stuff I've posted, if you actually sit down and listen to it then it can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience. I'm not sure it's ipod treadmill material. Maybe it is though. I'm about to get a new YMCA card so I'll let you know.

I have to thank Russell for organizing the whole thing and bankrolling the recording. It was recorded at Zero Return studios. If it wasn't the last thing recorded there then it would have to be one of the last. The whole thing was 16 minutes and with overdubs we got it done in maybe two hours. Russ had paid for the day so with all that time left over Lay Down Mains came in and recorded (and mixed) their tune "Grey Sands" which I believe came out on the ISP 7" comp.

Okay now,

Riff-fest III is this way...

Hopefully we can do something like it again someday. I had a blast.

Skronk

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_pUR2XbnPkng/R1oY182C_5I/AAAAAAAAACU/DPKYPcTSC3A/s320/Keith+Leslie.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5141449239741792146" /><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_pUR2XbnPkng/R2VyXmww9wI/AAAAAAAAADM/zzIfGZQ3TI4/s320/l_75d402055f34428e0e7291c1277d1b06.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5144643899208300290" />
"Skronk" is a term coined by Robert Christgau (or at least Lester Bangs attributed it to him in his "A Reasonable Guide to Horrible Noise") to describe the music made by musicians in the late '70s art-punk movement No Wave (i.e. DNA, Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, etc.), and like-minded noisy or 'difficult' pieces of music.

I just lifted that from http://skronkbox.blogspot.com. Of course, in the interim the term has been co-opted by other journalists to define a particular genre of music involving the saxophone. The downtown music of John Zorn comes to mind as an archetype for "skronk."

I do giveth and partaketh of the ol' skronk my own seff, though I feel as though the noisy aspect isn't quite as involved in my own playing. I have witnessed first hand people that find my free playing incredibly noisy and unmusical though, so the skronk is in the eye of the beholder. You can be the judge if you download the performances I'm posting of duets with Keith Leslie (on drums.) Keith is an incredible drummer and pianist, never ceasing to amaze me with his sense of spontaneity. He was the original drummer of Samadha and also played keyboards in Twittering Machine.

Why do I like this style of music? Because it's HARD. When nothing is preset and no one knows whats about to happen...well I think it's actually alot truer to what daily life is really like. It often sucks, but when it doesn't it can be very, very beautiful (in the words of John Lurie.)

Okay, enough bullshit.

There are three files: two live sets from Eyedrum and one from live @ WREK.

They are pretty big files but I think some of you will really enjoy them. They go well with coffee..maybe 10 a.m....I'll see you there.

Keith and Ben Avant Duets are here...

p.s. I encourage everyone to find John Coltrane's "interstellar Space" cd. That album inspired me to pick up the saxophone after a 5 year post high school hiatus. It is really what is behind my desire to explore the tenor sax/drum format. I've been listening to it for about 12 years now and I keep finding new things in it.

not in a food court...

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pUR2XbnPkng/R2ITuGww9uI/AAAAAAAAAC8/C-hvRJNSMks/s320/LAW-CD-box.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5143695407220586210" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_pUR2XbnPkng/R2ITuWww9vI/AAAAAAAAADE/LrD42ELTdww/s320/san_agustin-350x263.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5143695411515553522" />
...but in a radio station. Yes I got som peeps on the old Live @ WREK cd. Before Bryan Fielden was a beret wearin' goatee havin' jazz drummer (okay no hat or goatee) he was an indie rock guitarist. That's right. I promise. He was in a band called The 42 with another guy named Frank on drums and another guy on bass. Their track from the WREK cd is called " Perpheral Hearing Aid." I have no idea if it's Bryan singing or not. Bryan's frequent collaborator in San Augustin, Andrew Burnes, was originally known as a bass player rather than the international avant guitarde hero he is recognized as today. While he was in the aforementioned Barrel, he was also holding down the ass end of William Carlos Williams. Also in that band was my partner in tenor skronk Rob Mallard. I will be posting more music featuring Rob very soon. Their track is called "Salt Pilla (Heavy Parham.") And yes: live at wrek is now held in a food court in the student's center at Georgia Tech. The last time I played there a guy named Richard Noble was running it and he did a wonderful job...very friendly etc. It was very hard playing free jazz in that food court though, I must say. Support 'em now but don't forget this old stuff. The cd is available as a real player file on the wrek.org site.

42 and WCW this way...

The Birth of a performance artist

Little did Adam O. know that the Moreland Audio midwest tour would affect his direction in life so profoundly. Ithink it's an old OSX thing. In the meantime I'm posting an album called Nine//Underground. This was a compilation of Atlanta electronic/experimental music from 1980-84ish. My brother produced the album for Perimeter records. Arthur (my brother) had a radio show on WREK, initially called "Conceptions" and then "Notes From Underground", that played experimental, ambient and industrial music from around the world c. 1982-88 (I'm guessing.) His friend Glen Thrasher, now of A Capella Books, had a radio show running on WREK concurrently called "Destroy All Music." Ellen McGrail may still be doing that show, but I'm not sure because it's so hard to listen to WREK now (unless you're into terrrible Turkish pop music.) During that time there was a healthy scene in Atlanta that semi supported the extremes in art and music. I say that, but I was not there ( I was probably ten) and I remember my brother being very poor at the time. Anyway, this was before laptops, before PCs, before regular bars like Lenny's would accept just about anybody. These people were the true pioneers and I have to respect that because it was done with no expectation of real accolades whatsoever.

One person on this comp went on to semifame and that was Jarboe...real name Jane Couch. She ended up in Swans and now does her own alt/goth/diva thing as "The Living Jarboe." Let me tell you...when my brother was 20 and she was 31 and he brought her home for thanksgiving...well, my parents and my brother are great now. Just listen to her track and imagine the cranberry sauce!

Hmm...pvc precinct ended up having Johhny Ether aka John Laubach in the band..young schizophrenics really was a crazy dude..incest, well legend has it that it was brother, sister and daughter in their band...sequence 3 was John Kincaid who did "Personality Crisis" on WREK...Pillowtexans were people that lived in the Pillowtex warehouse on Mitchell Street(?) back when loft living was a very dubious prosect, indeed...

I can't ermember much else except that the label was perimeter records which was run by Chris Swarz. I swear I saw him dancing aroud drunk at El Myr last friday...who knows?

Here 'tis:

Nine//Underground

Rock, Paper, Scissors.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pUR2XbnPkng/R1mN682C_4I/AAAAAAAAACM/i0b05lZLjYk/s320/rps15+copy.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5141296493524877186" />
Doh! I mean Pine, Cotton, Sand...or is it Pine AND Cotton, Sand. I already can't remember. Well anyway, David Daniell sent the Barrel lp to me and one of those phrases is its title. He took it straight off of the 180 gram virgin vinyl so there are a few pops and scratches if you're scared of that sort of thing. I think it was recorded by the dude that recorded Engine Kid...somewhere up and to the right. There's nothing else to say other than it rocks hard. I guess I guess I could also say that it's hard to find bands in Atlanta using 2 marshall half stacks and an SVT. Nobody uses the manamps anymore (as far as I know and that's not saying much.)

Here they are:

Barrel lp

Oh yeah, I don't think the vinyl is available anywhere. It consisted of Blake Williams (wi) Nat Slaughter (sl) and Adam Overton (ov.) trombone-keys/bass/drums. I remember them being on the Medeski/Martin/Wood tip at the beginning, but they evolved into miles/drumandbass craziness. What I'm posting here sounds kind of like they warmed up by smoking a joint soaked in Miles Davis's ass sweat (I still have no idea how to make my own last name possesive.) We have three tracks from a cd titled "Suite for Bibi Andersson" and dated 6/15/99 only since they were young artists they did it eurosteez (15.6.99.) I showed the picture from the cd to Karen and all she could say was "that sure is a big bass." Unfortunately, unless I buy a scanner you will never know the mass of Nat's instrument. Why only three tracks? Because Wislov was three cocksure young boys who liked to play twenty minute songs and I need a new hard drive.

Wislov

More Moreland...

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_pUR2XbnPkng/R1bNV82C_3I/AAAAAAAAACE/MdddWzkp-Kg/s320/4756CAAA00058744000012F722155751140C079C9A039C07900E0B020A0D.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5140521801683763058" />
I just found a recording of Moreland Audio dated 1/17/02 from the Earl. I believe it was recorded by Henry Owings. Also on the bill that night were Ocelot and The Common Cold. I seem to remember not liking The CC that much, but when I looked them up on itunes...well it sounds kind of like Moreland Audio (maybe a little lighter.) It's funny, but when I listen to this stuff I can hear people I know in the audience and form a mental picture of the night. Listen for Bruce Bohannon...super easy to pick out. I also seem to remember Gary getting annoyed with the "crazy stuff" that I said in between songs, and you can see what that amounts to here.

MO//AUD live @ EARL

In the hopper for the moment I get an external hard drive:

Barrel studio album
Nine Underground (atlanta electronic music 80-82)
Keith Leslie/Ben Davis free jazz duets
Nu South Subterraneans
Book of Rides

Copage

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pUR2XbnPkng/R07TIhvmL_I/AAAAAAAAAB8/4vfcjrFL7ek/s320/037.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5138276368326733810" />
Almost forgot about Copa Vance in the String Theory post. Everything was recorded at Shangrila studios by Will Nameescapesme. I ended up being in two bands that were on the comp: A good Horse and Moreland Audio.

A Good Horse was Daniel Clay's band. I say that because he really wrote all of the compositions. The band consisted of me on saxophone, Daniel on Guitar, Robbie Handley on bass, Nat Slaughter on bass, and Jamie Shepard on drums. I will post more AGH shortly that also includes additional members Bryan Fielden on drums and Gordon Vernick on trumpet. This track from string theory is some of my favorite music ever, but shortly after it was recorded Daniel didn't want to do it anymore. Jeez Daniel...at least don't stop the solo stuff. I had a 102 degree fever the day this was recorded (in the summer.)

Moreland Audio was me on guitar and baritone guitar, Gary Flom from Purkinje Shift on guitar and lap steel and Adam Overton on drums and laptop metronome. Due to a tuner malfunction our track was tuned a half step up from the usual tuning. I was playing baritone guitar. The end of this track came from us fucking around in practice trying to duplicate a skipping cd player in our music.

For some reason Will did not want the musicians to be around when the music was mixed and I'll have to say publicly that that is completely insane. Around 1992 I was living in Home Park near GA Tech (though not attending) and within the next few years I ended up running into the guys that would form Barrel. I only bring it up because after hearing Barrel straight up punk rock did not seem so interesting anymore, and I wanted to find out how they got their particular sound. I was in a punk band at the time (Habeas Corpses) and it wasn't long after I heard Barrel that we all decided to call it quits. Barrel consisted of Rick Moore/Andrew Burnes/ David Daniell/ Scott Robbins.Guitar-sing/Guitar-hair/Bass-couch surfing/Drums-flat top. Maybe some day Rick will mp3ify their album for me, or maybe he'll give you one. In the meantime I'm posting links to their tracks from the "Compatibility of Dissonance" compilation...maybe from 1995? I believe it was the last stuff they ever recorded. So Rick, if you read this, the only person to blame for my artfaggotry is yourself! Would zip files of all this stuff be better? Anybody.

Barrel Tracks This Way

Please Don't Tell the Avant Garde

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pUR2XbnPkng/R0ux4RvmL5I/AAAAAAAAABE/pt0cJAD6cKA/s320/edit.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5137395380340010898" />
In addition to strumming the geetar my main job in life is honking on the saxophone (more on that later.) I was in a very short lived group with keith leslie (percussion) and daniel clay (guitar.) I think it lasted from 2005-2005. We played two shows: one in Baltimore to 4 people and one in atlanta. The one in atlanta was in an abandoned warehouse next to eyedrum. I had myself and Daniel convinced that we were going to contract avian flu from playing there. Daniel moved to Maine for a while and when he returned did not want to play this stuff anymore. To this day I cannot figure out why (let me know.) We recorded an album's worth of stuff with decatur engineer Ben Price...and here is the link to the mediafire file:

Clay---Davis---Leslie

I was in a group with Daniel called A Good Horse (his group) and I'll post that stuff soon too if I can get the thumbs up.

More old new music

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_pUR2XbnPkng/R0ur9hvmL1I/AAAAAAAAAAk/5Jurzox2_rE/s320/leebird-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5137388873464557394" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_pUR2XbnPkng/R0ur-BvmL2I/AAAAAAAAAAs/zGobw6cDb5M/s320/DSCF0022.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5137388882054492002" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_pUR2XbnPkng/R0ur-xvmL3I/AAAAAAAAAA0/AcBELfbRYOY/s320/3_4_05_003.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5137388894939393906" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pUR2XbnPkng/R0ur_RvmL4I/AAAAAAAAAA8/sf0W6JmstkY/s320/DSCF0034.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5137388903529328514" />
Rocklon:

I need to put a full bio up here, but the last rock band I was in (that played shows) was called Home of the Wildcats. The band had Gary Flom (purkinje shift, moreland audio,) Rick Moore (Barrel, John Brown, Copa Vance, Lay Down Mains) and Lee Corum (Some Soviet Station, Copa Vance, Lay Down Mains (Chapter Hall?.)) guitar&vox/guitar&vox/drums+dancing. I played bass and sang some as well. I feel like it was a pretty natural extension of everything that had come before, but that was not a turn on for the current Atlanta scene. Maybe it was because we used manamps, but we drove both the indie/softie/shaggers and the metal/devilhorn/you're sure the ace of spades chain wallet is still cool?/fakers out of every club we played in (EXCEPT for our first show at the Art Farm...people were clapping because they were that much closer to seeing the carbonas (hi there.)) We recorded what I consider to be a great album (a personal great...not great in the annals of rock great) and then I think overthought why no one liked our music so we broke up. No cd release...no nuttin'. West Side Red layed it to tape. Carls Saff (nutrino, Emperor Penguin) mastered. Sorry but I still think all the current atlanta rock sounds really weak (except this.) If you're gonna dance...flow with the noot and our kissin' cousins.

Man oh man this is getting needlessly long winded so here is the link to the Home of the Wildcats full length album.
